Personal profile

Research interests

My particular area of research expertise in the use of 3D imaging to understand the relationships between structure and function in environmental systems. I have led methodological development of multi-scale 2D and 3D analysis of sediments and soils, applying these innovative approaches to address key knowledge gaps within glacial, coastal salt-marsh, estuarine, peatland and urban contexts.

Since 2018, my research focus has evolved toward greater application of my conceptual and methodological expertise towards addressing real-world challenges situated in the context of current climate and environmental change. Integrating knowledge production and knowledge exchange/transfer as complementary facets of my research practice has resulted in a step change in successful funding through UKRI and other funding bodies, alongside greater partnership with policy and practice organisations, alongside a shift to leading, rather than supporting research projects.
