Abstract
Background: MRI services in the NHS face unprecedented pressure, with over 1.6 million patients awaiting scans, leading to delays in diagnosis, treatment, and worse patient experience. Contributing factors include limited scanner numbers, underutilisation of equipment, workforce shortages, and variable service organisation. Remote MRI scanning – where senior radiographers operate or supervise scanners offsite while appropriately trained onsite staff manage patient preparation – has been implemented internationally, extending operating hours, increasing scan throughput, and maintaining patient safety. Emerging UK evidence suggests this model may help reduce diagnostic bottlenecks.
Purpose: The poster explores the potential role of remote radiography in MRI delivery. It examines staff roles, patient safety, human factors, and IT governance, illustrating how these considerations may influence scanner utilisation, operating hours, and patient access in NHS imaging services.
