‘Assessment as and for learning’ using authentic assessments: a postgraduate perspective based on the MSc in Medical Imaging (Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) route)

Abstract

This poster discusses the purpose of assessment and then investigates the features of assessment of learning, assessment for learning and assessment as learning, including what reference points are used in these categories. The unique perspective each different student brings to assessment is then presented. Subsequently the paper explores "Assessment as and for Learning‟, a subset of assessment for learning and discusses the benefits of using authentic assessment tasks as learning. The link between assessment as learning and independent life-long learners is explored. Innovative authentic assessments used within the MSc. in Medical Imaging (MRI route) are presented and justified. In conclusion the paper presents authentic assessments as “assessment as learning” which is intrinsically motivating, encourages deep learning and improves student learning outcomes.
