Charlotte Mason in the 21st century

This concluding chapter locates Charlotte Mason's pedagogy and practice in the wider educational and political context by reorganising her 20 principles (introduced in Chapter 1, VanPelt) under three themes - educational underpinning (vision), political context (structure), and operationalisation of pedagogy (culture). Our book is aimed at a wide audience, including scholars, teachers, student teachers, homeschool educators, researchers, parents, theists, and non-theists. While the majority of chapters have been written by Charlotte Mason scholars/educators, most of whom would describe themselves as committed Christians who live and breathe her ideas, some chapters are authored by Muslim or secular scholars. We hope all readers, who are both familiar and unfamiliar with this 19th-century English Christian woman's pedagogical ideas, will find something of interest. This chapter was conceived by one of the editors (Elton-Chalcraft), with comments made on the draft by the other two editors.
