Abstract

Three studies - two Australian (Feather, 1970; Feather and Collins, 1974) and one American (Rockeach, 1973) - have used the Rockeach Value Survey (Rockeach, 1967) to examine the relationship between values and educational choice. The present study adds two British samples to this list: (a) a group of 345 students studying a range of subjects at a London polytechnic; and (b) a group of 196 fifth- and sixth-form students attending a selective high school in Essex. The school students were classified, on the basis of their proposed area of work or study, into five broad categories: engineering, science, business/clerical, teaching and arts.
