Abstract
The emotional support guide is an electronic resource which can be used by people when helping individuals in distress. The guide came to be developed after I observed an uncertainty from people about how to approach distress, which comes, not from reluctance to help but misconceptions and anxieties around despair. I wanted people to feel more confident in approaching distressing conversations especially around suicide and self-harm, and change perceptions around these issues. The guide is a simple, easy to use resource that can be utilised in many areas when dealing with distress. It takes the approach that by talking instead of avoiding a persons distress and allowing someone to explore their own decisions, we can help people to access the further support they may need to help them cope with their distress. The guide is structured in three sections. The first part is a question and answer section which provides an explanation of emotional support, its importance and raises awareness around distress, self-harm and suicide. The second part provides practical guidance on how to support someone during “difficult” conversations from beginning to end, including how to approach suicide and self-harm. The third section includes details on further support that can be offered to individuals, such as alternatives to self-harm and signposting details. The guide is designed as a support resource and should not be treated as an exhaustive or definitive source of information.
