Abstract

Intimate partner sexual abuse is a type of violence that occurs within a partner relationship, usually alongside other types of abuse. This includes any kind sexual act or behavior that is performed without consent. Men can be victims of sexual abuse in both opposite and same-sex relationships. Aggression that men can suffer includes sexual assault and forced penetration of another person. Traditionally, perceptions and attitudes towards sexual violence have reflected the gender role expectations held within wider society (Clements et al., 2014), thus enforcing that men are the sole sexual aggressors or willing sexual recipients while women are noncoercive sexually or victims of significant male-perpetrated sexual abuse (Clements et al., 2014).
