Sonographic markers of split cord malformation: enhancing diagnostic confidence

Background: Split cord malformation is a rare type of spinal dysraphism caused by the incomplete formation of the neural tube (Arbelo-Peres et al. 2023). A SCM is described as the spinal cord being split longitudinally into two separate hemicords that then rejoin (D’Agostino et al., 2019). The exact aetiology is unknown, but it has been thought to occur when an extra channel forms during early embryonic development, allowing tissue to grow into the middle and divide the developing spinal cord (Saini and Singh, 2010). Whilst the incidence of neural tube defects has decreased in Western countries due to the routine use of antenatal folic acid supplementation, making antenatal diagnosis rare (Mahapatra, 2011), ultrasound imaging plays a key role in detection and diagnosis, allowing for antenatal counselling and care planning.
