Tidal

Landscapes tend to be seen as static views. Yet, the contour of the land are traces of the forces of constant change; wind, weather and water ceaselessly shape and transform the ground and vegetation. This work utilises, maybe counterintuitively, the medium of photography to portray the dynamic nature of the landscape of the West Coast of Cumbria. It shows a view of the outgoing tide near Bowness on Solway, rendering the incremental, yet unstoppable impact of rhythmic daily deluges. Using the panorama format, the image was taken over several minutes, the movement of the water coaxing the camera into repeating and reiterating the recording of the changing coastal view. Launch exhibition for the West Coast Photo Festival and part of a group exhibition in the Dock Museum, Barrow-in-Furness, showcasing life on the Cumbrian west coast from the early twentieth century to now.
