Using sources to create narrative

Abstract

In class-based discussions of museum artefacts sourced from the 'Timeline Museum' I was impressed by the children's ability to make links with their own prior knowledge and to make logical guesses in an attempt to understand a complex artefact. Moments that stand out have reflected Hodkinson's (2004) work on children's developing sense of historical time; children remember more of what they are taught in history if they have an efficient chronological framework within which to place, store and retrieve what they have learned.
