Abstract
With the rising rates of ‘obesity’ in the UK, midwives are caring for more women with a high body mass index (BMI). Maternal ‘obesity’ may present increased complications, with these women offered additional management and care because of this. The use of language can have a huge impact on how women perceive themselves and the care they receive. This article considers the origins of ‘obesity’ and how the word ‘obesity’ may hinder the care we provide. It challenges midwives to consider the language they use and how this may affect the women-midwife relationship.
