When doing the right thing feels wrong

Research output: Contribution to specialist publicationArticle

Abstract

In complex, high-pressure project environments, doing the right thing can sometimes come at a personal cost. This blog explores the ethical and moral challenges leaders face when organisational demands conflict with personal values. Drawing on real-life experience from UK project delivery, it examines how stress can distort judgment, why ethical fading occurs, and what it means to lead with integrity in morally grey areas. Introducing the MERI model—Moral clarity, Ethical standards, Resilience, and Inclusivity—it provides a practical framework for values-led leadership—a powerful reflection for anyone leading teams through difficult decisions and uncertain terrain.
