Discipline and vocational education - jointly achieved

Abstract

In Part 1 my thesis presents evidence of the general lack in breadth of educational provision in curricula of a range of vocational education options: evidence of need and justification for such provision is offered. The necessity for the development of self discipline in education and in all areas of life is argued. In Part 2 my research examined three specific objectives in the context of the Appleby Heritage Centre; to seek evidence for:
* Its successful provision of a range of vocational courses.
* The accompanying development of social education and self discipline.
* To ascertain whether such provision could be replicated elsewhere.

The actual research process involved careful preparation for interviews with a range of participants, representing a wide area of associated interests. Interview findings were discussed and agreed with participants; analysed, and conclusions offered.

Research results demonstrated:
* The success of the Centre in its vocational education provision.
* The development of self discipline as implicit in its processes.
* The potential for development of other similar training centres elsewhere.

The research process, its findings, analysis and conclusions, combine to offer suggestions for the extension of vocational provision elsewhere, through practical viable processes; but also provide suggestions affecting present and future provision at the Centre.

It is intended that research findings and conclusions will be submitted to:
* Management and staff at the Centre.
* Heads and senior staff at Centre partner schools.
* To Centre trustees, and through them to school, business and voluntary sector associates.
* To interview participants.
* Government representatives at local, district and county level.
* By personal presentation to the local Member of Parliament.

Future needs to be resolved include:
* How Centre procedures and practice could be adapted to meet other situations.
* The need for catalysts, structures and conditions elsewhere to enable the development of similar centres.
* Government policies which encourage and permit such vocational education development.
* Government funding to enable this.
